From the Cocmo Cricket blog about the FSC certified paper they are using:
Cosmo Cricket Goes Green!
As a paper manufacturer, I often feel a little twinge of guilt when friends talk about environmental issues. So, I am over-the-top excited about the fact that now Cosmo Cricket paper is FSC certified.
So, what does FSC certified mean? It's actually a lot more than just protecting the environment. The FSC is very concerned about the social and human rights aspects associated with consuming natural resources as well as envirnomental issues.
Here's what they say, "Forests provide us with clean water, fresh air and they even help combat global warming. They also provide food, medicine and important natural resources, such as timber and paper. If managed responsibly, forests and plantations benefit forest people and the global community. However, in some countries as much as 80% of the timber is harvested illegally. This often involves violation of human rights and destruction of protected forests."
The FSC is the only group that:
prohibits conversion of natural forests or other habitat around the world
prohibits the use of highly hazardous pesticides around the world
prohibits the cultivation of genetically modified trees (GMOs)
respects the right of indigenous peoples around the world
controls each certified operation at least once a year – and if they are found not to comply, the certificate is withdrawn
By the way, our previous lines were printed on paper from these same forests, it has just taken some time...... and a lot of paperwork...... to acquire the certification!
